Sacramento RT posts record September ridership

In September, Sacramento Regional Transit District (RT) posted record ridership — carrying a daily average of 120,000 passengers on the agency’s light-rail and bus systems.

Daily light-rail ridership averaged 47,000 passengers, an 18 percent increase compared with September 2003’s daily average. Since July, RT’s ridership has increased 21 percent compared with similar 2003 data.

The ridership hike is partially driven by the less-than-a-year-old South Line and Sunrise light-rail extensions. Agency officials previously projected South Line ridership to reach 8,100 daily passengers by 2005, but daily September ridership already reached 13,600 passengers.

Part of the Amtrak/Folsom Corridor Project, the 2.8-mile Sunrise extension already is averaging 1,700 daily passengers. Including extensions to Folsom and the Sacramento Valley Amtrak station, the project is expected to add another 6,000 daily passengers when completed in October 2005.
