On Sept. 26, Sacramento Regional Transit District (SacRT) plans to open for revenue service the first phase of the South Line light-rail extension.

The $222 million project extends the line 6.3 miles from downtown Sacramento, Calif., to Meadowview Road.

Construction on the project — which includes seven stations — began in 2000.

The line is expected to add 8,100 daily passengers to the system by 2005, according to a prepared statement.

SacRT currently is completing conceptual engineering and evaluating environmental impacts for the project’s five-mile-long second phase.
