Sacramento agency celebrates 35 years of service

This week, the Sacramento Regional Transit District (SacRT) marked its 35th anniversary. During the past three-and-a-half decades, the agency has grown from a city-wide bus system to a multi-modal, regional transit system that operates a 37.5-mile light-rail service and 240 buses.

In 1987, SacRT introduced light-rail service to Sacramento, followed by extensions to South Sacramento, Rancho Cordova, Folsom and the Sacramento Valley Station. Ridership has steadily grown, with the agency posting average weekday light-rail ridership of 54,200 in February, a 9.5 percent increase compared with February 2007.

This year, the agency will begin construction on the South Line Phase 2 light-rail extension to Cosumnes River College and the first phase of the Downtown/Natomas/Airport light-rail extension. In addition, SacRT is developing a Transit Master Plan.
