Sacramento transit district's light-rail system turns 20

The Sacramento Regional Transit District (SacRT) is getting the cake and candles ready. Tomorrow, the district will celebrate the 20th anniversary of SacRT light-rail service by hosting a community festival and providing free train rides.

Light-rail service in Sacramento, Calif., began in 1987 after the district opened the Interstate 80 and Highway 50 corridors. SacRT, which operates a 37-mile light-rail system covering a 418-square-mile service are, has subsequently opened five track extensions, most recently the Gold Line extension to Amtrak’s Sacramento Valley Station.

SacRT will offer free train rides from 4:20 a.m. tomorrow until 12:40 a.m. on Saturday.
