Last week, San Diego’s North County Transit District (NCTD) broke ground on the $24.4 million, 40,000-square-foot SPRINTER maintenance facility.

To be built by Whiting-Turner Contracting Co., the facility will be used to maintain and store diesel multiple units that will operate on the SPRINTER passenger-rail line, scheduled to open in late 2007. Featuring a train washer and fueling depot, the facility also will serve as the central location for SPRINTER operations, dispatching, security and administrative offices.

The $385.6 million SPRINTER project includes reconstructing 22 miles of track in an east-west corridor owned by NCTD and building 15 stations. The line will serve the cities of Oceanside, Vista, San Marcos and Escondido.
