San Pedro & Southwestern sets safety record

The San Pedro & Southwestern Railroad (SPSR) recently marked 10 straight years without a train accident, setting a new safety record.

In addition, SPSR employees have not had a reportable injury since 1999.

“Safety is paramount and we’re very proud of this record,” said SPSR General Manager Scott Parkinson in a prepared statement.

Owned by the Arizona Railroad Group, SPSR moves agricultural chemicals, feed grains and building products, and interchanges with Union Pacific Railroad in Benson and Willcox, Ariz. The short line recently upgraded its rail-to-truck transload facility in Benson.

SPSR’s oldest predecessor dates back to 1888, when the Arizona and South Eastern Railroad built a 60-mile line from Benson to Bisbee. The railroad eventually became part of the Southern Pacific Railroad. SPSR was bought by Kyle Railways in 1992, StatesRail in 1997 and RailAmerica Inc. in 2002.
