Rail News: Rail Industry Trends
The California Transportation Commission recently approved allocating more than $364 million to the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) for preliminary design on a Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) extension to the Silicon Valley.
The funds will reimburse VTA for design work already completed, as well as help pay for remaining design. All design work is scheduled to be complete in late 2008, at which time the agency will seek Federal Transit Administration approval to proceed with final design and construction.
The 16-mile BART extension includes six stations, a maintenance facility and five-mile tunnel through downtown San Jose. VTA expects to launch construction in 2009 and revenue service, in 2016.
