The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) board recently approved placing a measure on the November ballot asking local residents to pay a one-eighth-cent sales tax increase to fund the operating and maintenance costs for the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) extension to Santa Clara County.

The 16-mile line would extend BART service from the Warm Springs District to Milpitas, San Jose and Santa Clara.

VTA is an independent special district responsible for operating light-rail, bus and paratransit services, managing congestion, completing specific highway improvement projects and conducing county-wide transportation planning.
