Security: BNSF encourages employees to be 'On Guard'

When it comes to security, Burlington Northern Santa Fe can use all the eyes and ears it can get. To motivate employees to alert the railroad about suspicious activities or persons, the Class I recently launched award program "BNSF On Guard."

Administered by local BNSF crime-protection specialists, the awards recognize workers who help protect the railroad's resources, people and facilities. Winners receive a BNSF On Guard pin and are the subject of an article on the Class I's Web site.

"Security has become everyone's business," said John Clark, BNSF assistant vice president, resource protection solutions team, in a prepared statement. "[We] continue to educate employees on work, personal and home security, as well as working to change employee behavior to become more aware of security risks and breakdowns."

BNSF is encouraging employees to report security violations; check peoples' identification and official credentials; prevent "tailgating" through secured doors or areas; double-check train, load and facility security; and report trespassers and crimes in progress.
