Rail News: Rail Industry Trends
On April 3, the Senate confirmed Jeffrey Shane as the first Under Secretary of Transportation for Policy.
The position is part of U.S. Department of Transportation's recent reorganization and enhancement of policy functions.
Since 1993, various components of policy development have been split among Transportation Policy, Aviation and International Affairs, and the Office of Intermodalism, each of which were headed by a separate, Senate-confirmed presidential appointee.
As under secretary, Shane will manage all aspects of USDOT's transportation policy, with all three policy areas reporting to him.
Since March 2002, Shane served as associate deputy secretary. He previously was a partner in Washington, D.C., law firm Hogan & Hartson, and served in a number of federal transportation-related positions, including assistant secretary for policy and international affairs at USDOT, and deputy assistant secretary for transportation affairs at the State Department.
