Siemens Transportation Systems Inc. recently won a $184 million order to build 55 SD160 light-rail vehicles (LRVs) for the Regional Transportation District of Denver (RTD) — Siemens’ largest-ever LRV contract.

RTD will use the vehicles to provide additional services as part of the FasTracks program, which calls for building and extending several light-rail lines. The vehicles will be delivered between 2009 and 2011. Since the early 1990s, Siemens has supplied 95 LRVs to RTD.

Meanwhile, Siemens also obtained a $31 million contract to build nine S70 low-floor light-rail vehicles for Norfolk, Va.’s Hampton Roads Transit. In November, the agency began construction on The Tide, a 7.4-mile light-rail line linking the Eastern Virginia Medical Center and downtown Norfolk. The line is scheduled to open in 2010; Siemens will deliver vehicles between June 2008 and November 2009.
