Siemens Transportation Systems recently obtained a $453.5 million contract to supply components for 500 locomotives CSR Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive Co. Ltd. is building for the Chinese railways.
The freight locomotives will be the most powerful series-production units on the market, according to Siemens. The locomotives will carry axle loads up to 25 tons and operate at speeds up to 75 mph. The first units are scheduled to enter service at the beginning of 2009.
