Leaders of six major West Coast ports recently sent a letter to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nevada) requesting continued funding for the Diesel Emissions Reduction Act (DERA).
The ports in Long Beach, Los Angeles and Oakland, Calif.; Portland, Ore.; and Seattle and Tacoma, Wash., long have supported DERA as an “effective and efficient funding program to reduce harmful diesel emissions in and around port facilities,” the leaders said in a joint statement.
The ports obtained DERA funding in last year’s stimulus package and partnered with local public and private agencies to implement emission-reducing technologies, including locomotive idle-control devices and truck engine retrofits.
