iIrx L.P. recently announced it obtained a contract to design and build an Internet Rail-Car Information System (iRIS) for Chicago Freight Car Leasing Co.

The software developer, which aims to develop Web-based systems for rail-operations management, plans to integrate wireless handheld personal computers operating over a local wireless network into Chicago Freight Car Leasing's home repair shop, Hoosier Railcar Services.

iRIS would enable Chicago Freight Car Leasing employees to input original car-inspection data on handheld PCs and track the information through the company's entire repair and billing process, involving maintenance, operations, marketing, finance and accounting departments, according to a company statement.

Repair personnel also would receive automatic notification if a car in Chicago Freight Car Leasing's shop needs additional inspection or repair work, or pertinent Association of American Railroads or Federal Railroad Administration mechanical advisories. Workers, too, would be able to manage car-builder and component warranty issues.
