Almost two years after beginning construction on the Central Link light-rail system, Sound Transit has reached a major milestone. Today, crews installed the project’s first rail sections, laying four 1,200-foot-long ribbons in Seattle’s SODO area.

Scheduled for completion in 2009, the 14-mile line will serve downtown Seattle, the industrial area south of the city and surrounding neighborhoods. Sound Transit officials project the initial segment will carry 42,000 passengers daily by 2020.
