Yesterday, the Federal Transit Administration awarded a $43.2 million grant to Sound Transit to help fund construction of the Central Link light-rail line between downtown Seattle and Tukwila, Wa.
The grant will cover two tunnels, an operations and maintenance facility, and roadway improvements.
Thirty-one electric propulsion light-rail vehicles will operate along the 14-mile system, which will serve 11 stations between downtown Seattle and South 154th Street in Tukila. Service is expected to begin in 2009, after which the system is projected to carry an estimated 42,500 daily passengers by 2020.
