Sound Transit continues to pursue extensions to its Link light-rail line. The agency will proceed with plans to build an extension to the University of Washington after the project obtained a "high" ranking from the Federal Transit Administration for New Starts dollars.

Part of Sound Transit’s plan to operate light-rail service from Sea-Tac Airport to the University District, the University Link would extend service from downtown Seattle to Capitol Hill and the college campus. Construction on the 3.1-mile line could begin in 2008 and be complete by 2016.

Sound Transit is seeking $700 million in federal funding for the $1.5 billion project; the remainder would be funded through existing taxes.

Early next year, the agency plans to seek FTA approval to proceed with final design, which is expected to take two years to complete.
