Rail News: Rail Industry Trends
Spoornet recently began using a Plasser & Theurer 09-3X Dynamic high-production tamper to maintain track on a coal line in Vryheid, Kwa-Zulu Natal. The South African railroad purchased the machine from Railway Mechanized Maintenance Co. Pty Ltd. (RAMCO), a subsidiary of Plasser Railway Machinery (South Africa) Pty Ltd.
Because of growing traffic on its coal and export iron ore lines, Spoornet is expanding its maintenance-of-way equipment fleet. The railroad recently awarded RAMCO contracts for two 09-3X tampers, which are designed to tamp three ties at a time and work in conjunction with a dynamic track stabilizer.
Spoornet plans to use the first 09-3X to tamp about 1,400 track miles annually. The second tamper — as well as a Plasser & Theurer RM900 ballast cleaning machine — is scheduled to be delivered next year.
