South African government-owned railroad Spoornet recently contracted TransCore to equip 80,000 freight cars with radio frequency identification (RFID)-based Automatic Equipment Identification (AEI) systems.

TransCore will partner with ANSYS Integrated Systems to deliver an initial order of 160,000 AEI tags later this year. The companies will complete deliveries in 2008.

The RFID-based AEI system will enable Spoornet to automate car tracing and status functions.

All North American rail cars used in interchange service are required to be equipped with AEI tags.
