Rail News: Rail Industry Trends
South Florida Regional Transportation Authority (SFRTA) — formerly known as Tri-Rail — recently purchased 6.7 acres in Boca Raton, Fla., to build a $10.3 million intermodal transit facility.
The station is the final phase of SFRTA’s $333 million T-Rex project designed to double track the agency’s entire corridor. The authority purchased the property from Boca Village for $2.7 million.
Scheduled for completion in 2004, the project’s first phase includes five bus bays, automobile drop offs, 183 parking spaces, boarding platforms connected to the station via a covered walkway and an entry portal.
The project’s second phase would include office and commercial space, and additional parking.
Once the T-Rex project is complete, SFRTA expects trains to operate on 20-minute headways during rush hour. Trains also would run later in the evening and more frequently on weekends.
In July, SFRTA changed its name from Tri-County Commuter Rail Authority.
