This week, South Korean National Railroad representatives are visiting Kansas City Southern's Kansas City, Mo., and Shreveport, La., facilities to gain an understanding of a U.S. Class I's safety programs, transportation procedures and operations logistics, according to a prepared statement.

North and South Korea expect to connect their government-run railroads to create business opportunities with Russia and China. The South Koreans are especially interested in North American railroads' relationship; how they compete and interchange with one another, and manage hazardous materials and environmental concerns; and the government's industry involvement, KCS officials said.

Next week, the South Koreans plan to tour rail facilities in Mexico City.
