The Harbor Association of Industry & Commerce recently honored Union Pacific Railroad with a “Salute to Industry” award.
The non-profit industrial organization — which promotes policies aimed at further enhancing the development of commerce and industry in southern California — recognized the Class I for its air pollution reduction and environmental stewardship efforts, including partnerships with ports in Los Angeles and Long Beach.
UP has added more than 3,300 new fuel-efficient, long-haul and high-horsepower locomotives since 2000, retired more than 2,200 older locomotives, overhauled 2,800 locomotive diesel engines, and certified more than two-thirds of its 8,400 locomotives under existing U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Tier 0, Tier 1 and Tier 2 emission standards.
The Class I also developed the technology for GenSet switchers, which can reduce emissions of oxides of nitrogen by 80 percent and particulate matter by 90 percent compared with a conventional switcher. UP operates a fleet of 165 GenSets, including 66 in California.
