On Tuesday, Port of Long Beach, Calif., Executive Director Richard Steinke announced plans to retire on Sept. 30. He has led the port for the past 14 years.

During his tenure, the port redeveloped the former Long Beach Naval Complex to create one of the nation's largest container cargo terminals. Steinke also transitioned the port to a builder of modern cargo terminals and a leading environmental steward. The port plans to spend $4 billion during the next decade on major improvements designed to “cement its position” among the world's leading ports, according to a prepared statement.

“Dick has been instrumental in developing the Port of Long Beach into one of the top seaports in the world," said Nick Sramek, president of the Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners, which governs the port. "He led the port out of the recent recession, keeping it strong financially, while guiding our major modernization and environmental projects."

The board of commissioners plans to soon launch a search for Steinke's successor; Steinke has agreed to help the board during the selection and transition phases.
