Last week, Robert Sumwalt was sworn in as a National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) member. To serve as vice chairman for a two-year term, Sumwalt will remain a board member until Dec. 31, 2011.

Most recently manager of aviation for the SCANA Corp., he previously was a commercial pilot for 24 years at Piedmont Airlines and US Airways. Sumwalt also previously served as a member of the Air Line Pilots Association’s Accident Investigation Board, chaired the association’s Human Factors and Training Group and co-founded its Critical Incident Response Program.

Including Chairman Mark Rosenker and members Deborah Hersman and Kathryn O’Leary Higgins, the NTSB investigates railroad, aviation and other transportation-related accidents.
