Supplier launches software targeting cuts in railroads' fuel costs

Fuel Conservation Technologies recently began marketing Fuel Optimizer System©, a software package designed to help railroads manage their fuel costs.
The Web-based software includes a simulator the supplier based on fuel-test results from various locomotive classes (as small as a GP-20), and a personalized, system-specific map for each railroad user.
Fuel Optimizer System would enable railroads to calculate fuel costs and consumption by locomotive, and by state for tax reporting purposes, providing more accurate cost estimates for both bulk and unit trains, according to a prepared statement.
The system also would enable railroads to provide customers a more exact pricing schedule and help determine fuel costs when a locomotive is shared between railroads, Fuel Conservation Technologies officials believe.
The software can help railroads reduce fuel costs as much as 8 percent, said Fuel Conservation Technologies President Phil Reid.
