On June 24, CSX Transportation held a conference in Jacksonville, Fla., to discuss its Incentive Management Process Addressing Costs Together (IMPACT) program with 29 suppliers.

IMPACT is designed to improve communication with suppliers, and generate ideas to identify new business products and services that can reduce purchasing and material costs, and boost productivity.

"IMPACT provides [an] opportunity for suppliers to strengthen
their business relationships with CSXT, drive down total supply-chain costs
and develop longer term relationships," said Howard Levy, CSXT senior vice president-purchasing and materials, in a prepared statement.

Since the railroad began the program in July 2002, suppliers and CSXT employees have submitted more than 400 cost-saving ideas. About 25 percent of the ideas have been implemented, saving the Class I $6.2 million.
