Suppliers plan soon to market more secure container seal

Savi Technology and OneSeal A/S Sept. 18 announced plans to jointly develop and market a disposable, low-cost electronic bolt seal designed to automatically transmit alerts via radio frequencies when container locking mechanisms are tampered with.

The seal would combine Savi's EchoPoint active radio frequency identification (RFID) technology with OneSeal's high-security lock design and manufacturing capabilities. Under a partnership agreement, the companies can jointly or independently market the seal.

The companies plan early next year to introduce the seal, which would help improve the security and management of containers moving by ship, rail and truck, according to a prepared statement.

The plastic-coated metal seal would include an active smart tag with integrated circuit board and miniature RFID antennae.

"OneSeal and Savi will produce a product that will help reduce the threat of terrorism and theft while helping to increase visibility of global supply-chain inventory and utilization of these important assets," said Chris Stephenson, Savi Technoloy vice president of product management.
