Surface transportation trade value tumbled in April, BTS says

The value of trade moved by surface transportation modes between the United States and Canada and Mexico in April totaled $79.8 billion, down from March’s record-setting $85.8 billion by 7 percent, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS). But trade value rose 8.2 percent on a year-over-year basis.

Surface transportation includes freight movements by rail, truck, pipeline, mail, Foreign Trade Zones and other modes. In April, 86.5 percent of U.S. trade by value with Canada and Mexico moved via land, 9.8 percent by vessel and 3.7 percent by air. The value of railed imports increased 7.4 percent to $8.8 billion and the value of railed exports climbed 13.9 percent to $5.2 billion compared with April 2011.

The value of trade moved by surface transportation modes between the United States and Canada in April reached $47.2 billion, up 5.6 percent year over year. The value of railed imports increased 3.4 percent to $5.9 billion and the value of railed exports jumped 13 percent to $2.8 billion.

The value of trade moved by surface transportation modes between the United States and Mexico in April totaled $32.6 billion, up 12 percent versus April 2011. The value of railed imports shot up 16.4 percent to $2.9 billion and the value of railed exports climbed 15 percent to $2.3 billion.
