Survey says: L.A. County residents would support additional transportation sales tax

Three-quarters of Los Angeles County residents would support a half-cent sales tax to fund transportation improvement projects, according to results of a survey recently conducted for the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LACMTA) by Fairbank, Maslin, Maulin & Associates.
Between June 5 and 15, the firm polled 1,400 “likely voters” to determine if they would approve the tax to fund projects ranging from light-rail extensions to airport connectivity improvements to local neighborhood street repairs. The results are similar to those from a recent third-party survey conducted by MoveLA, a coalition that backs alternative transportation funding and implementation strategies. Both surveys found support for a half-cent sales tax initiative exceeds the two-thirds margin needed to pass.
LACMTA has proposed placing a half-cent sales tax on the November ballot. If approved, the measure would generate about $40 billion over a 30-year period to finance dozens of transit, street and highway improvement projects. The board will discuss whether or not to place the measure on the ballot at a meeting to be held tomorrow.
