Swedish National Rail Administration plans soon to accept bids to construct a portion of the Citytunnel project, which would connect the southern Sweden railway systems.

The contract, E302, is the third Citytunnel contract to open for bids. It would include terracing, constructing road diversions, bridges and support walls, and installing noise protection, plantings and a groundwater handling system.

The 10.5-mile project includes a 3.7-mile underground tunnel and 6.8 miles of aboveground construction, and would connect a new Malmo Central Station and the Oresund Bridge.

Bids must be submitted by December. Construction is expected to start in 2004 and be completed by 2009.

The agency also is accepting bids for the Malmo Central Station lower tunnel and ramp, and tunnels and underground cavity. Other contracts are expected to be awarded between 2004 and 2007. The railroad plans to award 20 contracts for the entire project.
