Swiss railway orders freight locomotives from Bombardier

Swiss Federal Railways (SBB Cargo AG) recently awarded Bombardier Transportation a $109 million contract for 40 freight locomotives, which are scheduled to be delivered between December 2002 and March 2005.

The railroad plans to operate the electric locomotives primarily on its north-south German/Swiss corridor route, according to a prepared statement.

The type Re 482 locomotives are dual-system power units designed to be operated both on Swiss and German rail networks, eliminating the need to change locomotives at the border.

SBB Cargo AG already operates 10 similar locomotives in Switzerland; more than 100 RE 482s are in service at various European railroads.

The locomotives, which are designed to reach a maximum speed of 87 mph, can carry cross-border freight traffic in countries with a line voltage of 15 or 25 kV AC.
