TMCA hands out transportation marketing and communications honors

The Transportation Marketing & Communications Association (TMCA) recently presented the 2006 Compass Awards to 72 transportation and advertising firms. Formerly known as the “Trannys,” the more-than-50-year-old awards recognize marketing and communications achievements in the transportation and logistics industries, including accomplishments by railroads, transit agencies, trucking firms, ocean carriers and third-party logistics providers.

The association presented the “Best of Show” award — introduced this year to honor the organization with the highest overall score — to Pilot Air Freight.

In the “integrated communications” category, TMCA presented awards of excellence to Ryder; Write Edge Communications for Fikes Truck Line; FedEx Freight; Pilot Air Freight and the Tri-County Metropolitan Transportation District of Oregon (TriMet). The association also handed out awards of merit to LM&O Advertising for the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA); Vantage Point for Saia; Versant for the Wisconsin Department of Transportation; Averitt Express; the Chicago Transit Authority; Horizon Lines; Illinois Tollway; Regional Transportation District of Denver (RTD); TriMet; and World Trade Magazine.

In the “single advertisement” category, TMCA presented an award of excellence to KempGoldberg for Schneider National Inc., and awards of merit to LM&O Advertising for WMATA, KempGoldberg for Schneider National, Ozburn-Hessey Logistics and the Maryland Transit Administration (MTA).

“Advertising campaign” category award of excellence winners included Freightliner L.L.C., Port Freeport, RTD and the Virginia Port Authority; and award of merit winners were Community Transit, GE Rail Services, the Greater Vancouver Transit Authority, McLeod Softward, Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority and XTRA Lease.

In the “direct marketing” category, TMCA presented awards of excellence to CSX Intermodal and Manna Distribution Services; and awards of merit to KempGoldberg for Schneider National, Prophesy Transportation Solutions and the city of Santa Fe-Santa Fe Trails, N.M.

In the “communications collateral” category, the association presented awards of excellence to BQR Advertising & Public Relations Inc., Canadian National Railway Co., RTD and Southeastern Freight Lines; and awards of merit to KempGoldberg for Schneider National, BQR Advertising and Public Relations Inc., Freightliner, VantagePoint for Saia, Amtrak, FedEx Freight, GO Transit, MTA, Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority and XTRA Lease.

“Publications” category award of excellence winners included Amtrak, Port Freeport and Roadway Express Inc.; and award of merit winners were BSY Associates Inc. for Evergreen America Corp., KempGoldberg for Schneider National, Committee of Inter-American Ports, GATX Rail and the Port of Tacoma.

Meanwhile, Amtrak won a “new media” category award of excellence; and ALK Technologies, Averitt Express, GE Rail Services, the Greater Vancouver Transit Authority, MTA New York City Transit (NYCT), Ozburn-Hessey Logistics and SEKO Worldwide took home awards of merit.

In the “audio visual” category, TMCA presented awards of merit to Roadway Express, BCP Group for CN, the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority, Pinellas Suncoast Transit and Satellite Logistics Group.

“Special events” category award of excellence winners included BQR Advertising and Public Relations, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and Regional Transportation Commission; while awards of merit went to AIMS Logistics, Capitol Corridor Joint Powers Authority, NYCT and TriMet.

Finally, in the “media relations” category, the association presented awards of excellence to GE Rail Services and Community Transit; and awards of merit to KempGoldberg for Schneider National and GO Transit.

TMCA also named Chuck Lounsbury, former Ryder senior vice president of strategy, marketing and acquisitions, the 2006 Marketing Executive of the Year. Created in 2003, the award recognizes an individual who “leverages the value of marketing to achieve organizational success,” TMCA said.
