The Transportation Marketing & Communications Association (TMCA) recently named the late Mike Russell, former American Trucking Associations (ATA) vice president for public affairs, the 2007 Marketing Executive of the Year. Russell died last year in a whitewater rafting accident in Colorado.
Since 2003, TMCA has presented the award, which recognizes an individual who demonstrates the “highest principles, creative and strategic characteristics desired in a marketing or communications professional” in the transportation industry.
“Mike Russell stood for many of the qualities and values we all strive for as professional communicators in the transportation industry, which is why we felt it very appropriate to present this award posthumously to Mike,” said Tom Nightingale, TMCA president and VP of communications and chief marketing officer for Con-way Inc., in a prepared statement.
Russell helped generate positive news coverage for the ATA, improve the public image of member motor carriers and professional truck drivers, and promote the trucking industry’s safety record, according to TMCA.
He joined the ATA in 1999 after serving the Clinton-Gore Administration in various posts, lastly as director of public and consumer affairs for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Russell also previously was a staff member for former Vice President Al Gore and press secretary for former U.S. Surgeon General M. Joycelyn Elders.
