The National TRANSCAER Task Group recently presented 2004 TRANSCAER National Achievement Awards to BNSF Railway Co. and Norfolk Southern Corp.

The awards recognize the railroads’ achievements in chemical transportation safety activities, organizational commitment, financial support and manpower investment.

BNSF worked with numerous federal agencies to provide railroad emergency response, hazard awareness and railroad familiarization training to nearly 3,400 emergency responders. The Class I also assisted with traffic-flow studies, emergency plan reviews and outreach efforts on rail issues.

NS held Transportation Community Awareness and Emergency Response (TRANSCAER) events in 18 states and trained about 4,000 emergency responders. The railroad also developed a Railroad Emergency Response Planning Guide and awarded 20 scholarships that will enable emergency responders to attend the Transportation Technology Center Inc.’s Emergency Response Training Center in Pueblo, Colo.

A nationwide community outreach program, TRANSCAER promotes chemical transportation emergency preparedness and awareness in communities, and strives to foster partnerships between chemical producers, distributors, carriers, first responders and government agencies. The organization is sponsored by the American Chemistry Council, Association of American Railroads, Chemical Educational Foundation, CHEMTREC®, The Chlorine Institute Inc. and National Tank Truck Carriers.
