The TRANSCAER® Task Group recently awarded the 2002 TRANSCAER National Achievement Award to Norfolk Southern Railway.

The award recognizes NS for its support of Transportation, Community Awareness and Emergency Response (TRANSCAER), and its efforts in emergency-preparedness activities, organization commitment, financial support and manpower investment.

Last year, The Class I conducted 127 TRANSCAER training programs, drills and exercises in 267 municipalities — surpassing 680 hours of instruction time — provided scholarships enabling firefighters to obtain hazardous-material training, and donated tank-car valve assemblies to fire academies and training facilities.

NS also sponsored a weeklong Whistle Stop Tour that traveled to six cities in four states and helped train about 1,500 emergency responders. The tour included hands-on and classroom training taught by instructors from
carriers, chemical manufacturers, emergency-response contractors and
government agencies.

A nationwide community outreach program designed to promote chemical transportation emergency preparedness and awareness, TRANSCAER attempts to foster partnerships between chemical producers, distributors, carriers, first responders and government agencies.

TRANSCAER is sponsored by the American Chemistry Council, American Trucking Association, Association of American Railroads, Chemical Educational Foundation, American Petroleum Institute, American Waterways Operators, The Chlorine Institute and National Tank Truck Carriers.
