TSA begins baggage screening at D.C.'s Union Station

This month, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will begin the second phase of its transit and rail inspection pilot program at Washington, D.C.’s Union Station.

TSA officials conducted the program’s first phase last month at Amtrak and Maryland Rail Commuter’s New Carrollton, Md., station, where they screened baggage for explosives.

The administration will use Smiths Dectection’s Explosive Detection tomography System (EDtS) to screen bags. Designed to screen up to 1,000 bags per hour, EDtS features a multidimensional image technology to detect explosives, including industrial and military plastic explosives.
