April's Transportation Services Index (TSI) continued to reflect the weak economy. The index of 103.0 dropped 0.5 percent from March’s level and 7.4 percent compared with April 2008’s TSI — falling to its lowest April level since 2003, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS).

April’s Freight TSI of 100.2 declined 1.2 percent from March’s level and 8.5 percent from April 2008’s count. During the nine-month period between July 2008 and April 2009, the Freight TSI decreased 10 percent.

April’s Passenger TSI of 113.2 rose 1.4 percent from March’s level, but fell 4.2 percent compared with April 2008’s TSI — the second-largest April-over-April decline in the passenger index’s 20-year history, BTS said.
