Recent rail-car orders suggest a long-forecasted rebound is under way for car builders. On Nov. 15, TTX Co. announced it ordered 700 double-stack cars for delivery in 2003, two weeks after GATX Rail placed orders for 7,500 cars over five years.
TTX ordered 500 stand-alone, 53-foot double-stack cars from National Steel Car and 200 three-unit, articulated, 53-foot double-stack cars from Gunderson Inc.
The company, which is owned by North America's nine largest railroads, operates a free-running fleet of more than 127,000 intermodal, automotive and other special-use cars.
