Tacoma port selects contractor for grade separation overpass

Last month, the Port of Tacoma, Wash., awarded a $21.8 million contract to Scarsella Brothers Inc. to construct the final piece of the Lincoln Avenue Grade Separation project.
The contractor will build a 2,200-foot-long overpass across four sets of BNSF Railway Co. and Union Pacific Railroad tracks in the Tacoma Tideflats area. Currently, trucks wait up to 45 minutes at a grade crossing while trains serving the port’s two main intermodal yards pass through.
The port obtained $15.4 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds for the overpass. Construction is expected to start later this month or in early September and be completed in 2011.
The port previously completed three surface streets and relocated utilities for the $53.2 million grade separation project. The port will cover about $17.9 million of the total cost.
