Tanzania pre-qualifies bidders for state railway's privatization
advertisement
Tanzania May 7 identified four bidders for state-owned Tanzania Railways Corp. (TRC), which the country plans to privatize as part of reforms encouraged by western donors seeking to boost Tanzania's economic growth.
TRC has been operating at a loss the past few years because of reduced agricultural output — especially cotton — from Tanzania's western lakeshore regions.
Tanzania pre-qualified Comazar Consortium (Great Lakes Railway Co.), which comprises the national railways of South Africa (Spoornet) and Belgium (SNCB), and Genesee and Wyoming Inc. to submit bids on leasing, managing and operating TRC's infrastructure, and providing freight and passenger services.
The country also pre-qualified as bidders CANAC Inc. and French railway SNCF International, pending finalization of their consortia.
Officials from Tanzania plan to identify the successful bidder during the fourth quarter.
