Rail News: Rail Industry Trends
Tennessee Southern Railroad Co. and the Florence-Lauderdale County Port Authority recently agreed to extend a lease under which the 118-mile short line operates the Florence, Ala., port.
In addition, Tennessee Southern recently opened a container transload facility at the port, where the Patriot Rail Corp. subsidiary railroad conducts rail, truck and barge operations, and manages a 100,000-square-foot warehouse.
Last year, the port handled more than 300,000 tons of cargo, including coiled steel, aluminum ingots, railroad ties and various aggregates.
“Our ability to now handle containers represents a potential growth area for the port,” said Stan Wlotko, Tennessee Southern’s senior vice president of operations, in a prepared statement. “We will continue to work with the authority to expand our operations.”
