Tennessee Southern Railroad Co. (TSRR) has landed a trio of new customers and a sextet of refurbished locomotives.

The 118-mile short line recently solicited business — projected to boost annual carloads between 900 and 1,200 units to about 7,000 — from Hassell & Hughes Lumber Co., Synagro Technologies Inc. and Smelter Services Corp.

Hassell & Hughes will ship bagged and palletized hardwood pellets from the Port of Florence, Ala., to the Northeast and West; Synagro will ship containers from a new TSRR interchange in Natco, Tenn., to Coal Island in Florence; and Smelter Services will ship aluminum castings and receive salt and potash via the short line.

“This new business demonstrates how short line railroads such as TSRR work closely with customers to provide customized transportation service solutions,” said Stan Wlotko, senior vice president of operations for TSRR parent Patriot Rail Corp., in a prepared statement.

The short line also recently took delivery of six refurbished GP-10 locomotives from National Railway Equipment Co. The units feature N-Force technology — a wheel slip system designed to provide a 1,700-horsepower locomotive the tractive effort of a 2,300-horsepower unit — and a new paint scheme for Patriot Rail, which also owns Rarus Railway Corp.
