Texas DOT contracts consultant for I-10 freight-corridor study

Texas Department of Transportation in late August selected Columbia, S.C.-based Wilbur Smith Associates (WSA) to conduct the National Interstate 10 Freight Corridor Study, which would address increased truck and intermodal traffic from Los Angeles to Jacksonville, Fla.
Texas DOT serves as contracting agency for a multi-state initiative aimed at determining needed I-10 corridor transportation improvements to better accommodate freight needs.
WSA will study current and anticipated traffic-growth rates, and address transportation issues and constraints of all affected parties; I-10 runs through eight states, 17 major urban areas, several international ports and all U.S./Mexican border gateways.
The goal of WSA's 18-month study — divided into evaluation timeframes 2008, 2013 and 2025 — is to develop a final implementation plan. The consultant would research the corridor's definition and condition; determine current freight transportation needs; identify constraints, needs and opportunities aimed at providing improvements and scenario recommendations; and address funding sources.
WSA acts as the lead firm in a professional association including HNTB Corp., Reebie Associates and Iteris Inc. Arno Hart, director of WSA's economics, freight and finance division, will serve as the study's project manager.
