San Francisco is a step closer to a new intermodal transit center. Last week, the Transbay Joint Powers Authority (TJPA) board approved a plan to build the $3.4 billion Transbay Transit Center project — which will replace the current Transbay Terminal and bring Caltrain trains to the new facility — in two phases.
The $983 million first phase calls for designing and constructing the aboveground portion of the transit center building, rail foundation bus ramps and storage, and designing the underground rail-level portion. Work is scheduled to begin in 2008 and be complete in early 2014.
The second phase includes extending the Caltrain commuter-rail 1.3 miles from Fourth and King streets underground to the new center. Work is scheduled to begin in 2012 and be complete in 2021.
TJPA is a collaboration of bay area government and transportation agencies committed to replacing San Francisco’s Transbay Terminal to meet area transportation needs.
