January’s Transportation Services Index (TSI) of 111.3 decreased 0.1 percent compared with December — the second-straight monthly decline since a 1.2 percent gain in November, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics. The January index also dropped 0.3 percent compared with January 2005.
The Freight TSI of 112.3 rose 0.5 percent compared with December, ending a one-month decline. However, the index fell 0.5 percent compared with January 2005 — the first year-over-year decline in a January since 2002.
January’s Passenger TSI of 108.7 decreased 1.2 percent compared with December after posting a gain the previous month. The index rose 0.3 percent compared with January 2005, but registered the smallest January gain since 2002.
For the full year, the TSI rose 1.2 percent compared with 2004 — the smallest annual gain since 2001. The 2005 Freight TSI rose 0.5 percent and Passenger TSI increased 3.0 percent. During the fourth quarter, the TSI rose 0.4 percent, Freight TSI increased 1.1 percent and Passenger TSI decreased 1.4 percent compared with the same 2004 period.
The TSI is a measure of month-to-month changes in the output of services provided by for-hire transportation industries, including rail, air, truck, inland waterways, pipelines and local transit.
