Transportation Services Index gained ground in September

In September, the Transportation Services Index (TSI) increased 1 percent from August’s level to 101.7, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS). The index also rose 2.1 percent compared with September 2009’s TSI.

September’s Freight TSI of 98.7 also increased 1 percent on a month-over-month basis and 2.1 percent on a year-over-year basis. The index rose 5.5 percent during a 16-month period from June 2009 to September 2010 after declining 15.3 percent in the 10-month period between August 2008 and May 2009.

September’s Passenger TSI of 112.6 also increased 1 percent on a month-over-month basis and climbed 2 percent on a year-over-year basis.

In the third quarter, the TSI inched up 0.9 percent compared with the second quarter’s level, the fourth quarterly increase in five quarters. The Freight TSI rose 0.8 percent (also the fourth quarterly gain in five quarters) and Passenger TSI increased 1.2 percent (the third-straight quarterly gain).
