In August, the Transportation Services Index (TSI) of 111.5 dropped 0.1 percent compared with July — the second-consecutive monthly decline, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics. However, the index rose 2.5 percent compared with August 2004.
The August Freight TSI of 112.4 rose 0.5 percent compared with July — the index’s first gain after two-straight monthly declines. The Freight TSI also increased 2 percent compared with August 2004.
The August Passenger TSI of 109.1 fell 1.5 percent compared with July, ending a streak of three-consecutive monthly gains. However, the index rose 3.9 percent compared with August 2004.
During a six-month period ending in August, the TSI increased 1.4 percent, Freight TSI rose 0.8 percent and Passenger TSI climbed 2.8 percent compared with the previous six-month period.
The TSI is a measure of month-to-month changes in the output of services provided by for-hire transportation industries, including rail, air, truck, inland waterways, pipelines and local transit.
