Transportation Services Index inched up in May, BTS says

In May, The Transportation Services Index (TSI) reached 100.7, up 0.1 percent from April’s level and 3.9 percent from May 2009’s count, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS). Through 2010’s first five months, the index decreased 1.1 percent compared with the same 2009 period.

The May Freight TSI of 97.7 declined 0.4 percent on a month-over-month basis after posting gains in April and March. However, the index increased 4.4 percent compared with May 2009’s Freight TSI. Through the year’s first five months, the index decreased 1.9 percent.
 
The May Passenger TSI of 111.3 rose 1.8 percent from April’s level and 2.3 percent from May 2009’s count. Through 2010’s first five months, the Passenger TSI increased 1.3 percent year over year.
