Despite a 0.5 percent drop in December from November's level, the Transportation Services Index (TSI) climbed 0.6 percent in 2007 to 110.5 compared with 2006's total, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation's Bureau of Transportation Statistics.
 
A measure of month-to-month changes in the output of services provided by for-hire freight transportation industries, the TSI has risen 7.8 percent the past five years and 16.8 percent the past decade.

The Freight TSI at December's end reached 108.8, down 1.3 percent from November's level and 0.1 percent from 2006's total — the second-straight year-over-year decline. A measure of the month-to-month changes in the output of services provided by for-hire rail, trucking, inland waterways, pipelines and air freight companies, the Freight TSI remained 2.2 percent below December 2005's level and 2 percent below December 2004's level, as well.   

However, the index has increased 4 percent during the past five years and 12.4 percent the past decade.

The Passenger TSI at 2007's end reached 117.1, up 1.8 percent from November's level and 2.5 percent from 2006's total — the sixth-consecutive annual increase. A measure of the month-to-month changes in the output of services provided by for-hire air, local transit and intercity rail providers, the Passenger TSI has climbed 19.9 percent the past five years and 30.2 percent the past decade.
