The Transportation Services Index (TSI) posted an increase in October for the second-straight month, rising 1.3 percent to 126.7 compared with September, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation's Bureau of Transportation Statistics. The index also increased 6.6 percent compared with October 2003's 118.9 TSI.

The October Freight TSI of 127.6 rose 1.1 percent compared with September and 5.9 percent compared with October 2003. The Passenger TSI of 125.2 increased 1.9 percent and 8.4 percent compared with September and October 2003, respectively.

"More passengers and cargo are moving throughout the country today than at any point since we started measuring the TSI," said Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta in a prepared statement.

The TSI is a measure of month-to-month changes in the output of services provided by for-hire transportation industries, including railroad, air, truck, inland waterways, pipelines and local transit. The index includes historic data from 1990 to the present; changes are measured against a base year of 1996.
